On April 9th, the digital world celebrates IoT Day. A day where, no matter where you are in the world, conversations about IoT fill the space with bold predictions, confident roadmaps, and more than a little buzz around artificial intelligence (AI).

And it’s true: AI has entered the chat. It explains. It predicts. It recommends. Sometimes it even sounds like it knows your plant better than the people running it.

But while AI may be the new kid on the block, IoT is definitely not dead yet. It is working quietly in the background that makes intelligence possible in the first place.

Inspired by this year’s IoT Day theme, “The conversation we need now”, let’s look past the hype and talk honestly about the relationship between AI and IoT in regulated, safety‑critical industrial environments.

Because in process industries, excitement doesn’t run the plant. Reality does.

No matter where you turn, no matter where you work, the topic on everyone's mind is AI. It’s versatile, visible, engaging, and easy to use. It’s no surprise that not only is everyone chatting with it, but everyone is talking about it.

IoT, on the other hand, is quieter; having been on the scene since 1999, it has become something that has slowly faded out of conversations. But it is still there, and it is still relevant. It lives in instruments, field devices, communication networks, gateways, edge systems and the digital tools, platforms, and apps that make data accessible, visually appealing and interactive.

So what does the rise of AI mean for IoT?

Well, the convergence of AI and IoT, often referred to as AIoT, points out that intelligence only becomes useful when it is grounded in reliable, real‑world data.

AI has not killed IoT, if anything, AI and IoT are made for each other. Separate, they’re impressive. But together, they’re what make industrial intelligence fit for play.

Architecture isn’t ideological. It’s practical and a little bit cautious in a good way.

Reality: Scaling is where intelligence proves itself.

Proof of concept is exciting; it works, people nod, and what is possible is shown. Often, people think the hard part is over, but newsflash, it is not.

Scaling is where reality shows up, with governance requirements, cybersecurity considerations, lifecycle management questions, and organizational trust. It also often includes the uncomfortable realisation that one clever POC doesn’t automatically survive across sites, shifts, and years.

This is the stage where many promising ideas stall. Not because the technology failed, but because the organisation wasn’t ready to run it every day.

This is where long‑term partnerships and lifecycle expertise matter most. Because intelligence only creates value when it can continuously produce reliable, secure, and dependable value at scale.

AI is powerful. That’s not a question. And it is not that AI has killed or replaced IoT. AI depends on IoT; they are more powerful when they are working together in harmony.

AI is nothing without reliable measurement, secure connectivity, and context‑rich data, provided by its partner in crime, IoT. At the end of the day, IoT provides the truth that keeps intelligence grounded.

So, on this IoT Day, the conversation we need is how to leverage the blossoming relationship between AI and IoT to build intelligence on solid industrial foundations. And why the quiet work of measurement, connectivity, and context matters more than ever.
