How Istria is quenching its thirst

The challenges of extracting potable water at Butoniga Reservoir

The artificially created Butoniga Reservoir is located in the stunning Istrian part of Croatia. This water reservoir in Istria has been supplying the surrounding regions with water for human consumption since 1987. It is the most important water source in this popular vacation destination, particularly in the hot summer months when the region attracts many tourists.

Benefits with the Endress+Hauser solution:

  • Multiple parameters in one sensor

  • Quick response enables immediate process adjustments

  • Comprehensive overview of water quality

  • Protection of the plant through targeted water layer selection

Customer challenge

The Butoniga Reservoir supplies over 7 million m³ of potable water annually, mostly in summer. To ensure high quality, the team must select the right lake layer. Surface water gets too warm, while deeper layers are cooler but contain sludge. The challenge is to meet legal temperature limits while minimizing sludge intake to ensure consistently clean drinking water.

Our solution

David and his team rely on Memosens Wave CAS80E for fast, multi-parameter water analysis from the optimal lake layer. The UV-Vis spectrometer enables precise monitoring of turbidity, nitrate, TOC, BOD, and COD in one sensor. Endress+Hauser supports with installation and expertise, ensuring efficient operation and improved water quality insight.
